Main areas of research:

I am currently working on trade systems connecting the Muslim World, the Byzantine Empire and Northern Europe in the 9th and 10th centuries. The starting point of my research are hoards of Islamic dirhams found in the Baltic area and Eastern Europe (preliminary map). I try to elucidate the economical logic of this trade system, as well as the impact of the massive inflow of Islamic silver on the economic, social and political structures on the European North. I am interested, in particular, in state formation processes which may have been significantly accelerated by the existence of the Oriental trade system.

I am also interested in Byzantine history, in particular in the transformation of the Empire in the 7th century. I am currently publishing a monograph on the Monothelete controversy and its political background. I also work on Middle Byzantine historiography, in particular on the sources for the 7th and 8th centuries.

Current projects:

The Oriental trade system and the emergence of states in Northern Europe in the 10th century

Historical commentary of the Acts of the 6th ecumenical council (Constantinople, 680-681)

Conference on the Chronicle of Theophanes the Confessor (Paris, 14-15 September 2012):
